Dentofacial Orthopedics

Dr. Ben Fishbein specializes in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

Most people know that Orthodontists straighten teeth, but did you know that they also assist in changing the shape of the facial bones and jaws.

The speciality of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is an additional three-year residency program after completing four years of dental school.  Dr. Ben Fishbein was selected to this speciality immediately after completing dental school.

While Orthodontics involves tooth movement, dentofacial orthopedics entails the guidance and development of facial bone growth that occurs during childhood.  Common appliances used during this time period include expanders (for increased width of the jaw), Herbst and Mara appliances (for mandibular advancement), and reverse pull headgear (for maxillary advancement).  We sometimes used these appliances before braces, but also use these during full braces treatment.

Because Dr. Fishbein is skilled in both Orthdontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, he will create a treatment plan that integrates both the treatment of your teeth and jaws.  We take facial structure into consideration when completing your orthodontic treatment.
